This week with a dope guestmix by “Liquid Phonk” from Freiburg Germany. The most people know Liquid Phonk already from releases on Compost, Foul & Sunk, Something Different Records and Lifted Digital. I’m very happy to have these guys in the show.
INTERVIEW (as always by Mixed Apples South Africa)
MA: Good Morning and best wishes from South Africa…
LP: Hello from the wild South-West of Germany!
MA: Please can you introduce yourselves and tell us where are you guys are from?
LP: Liquid
Phonk is a Deephouse/House-Producer-Duo from the South of Germany:
Patrick Lesser (34) from Offenburg and Mirko Koenig (38) from Freiburg.
Liquid Phonk started 1999.
After some releases we were putting the project on hold for a few years
(both Mirko and Patrick, went their own musical way: Mirko founded the DJ team
‘Deepkins’ with his old friend Christoph Shane and Patrick had a few
techno releases on Bangbam, Labil and May Recordings. We restarted the
project Liquid Phonk in 2012 – with refreshed vigor and sound!
MA: Please give us a bit of background on how you guys got started in music?
Patrick: My
whole family is very musical. Almost everyone is playing an instrument
or sings. So i followed the footsteps and began playing keyboard/piano
and drums. At the age of 14 i was able to have a placement for week at a
local recording studio. Since this experience i started collecting
studiostuff and synths and built my own studio. unfortunatelly this
hobby is a bottomless pit.
Mirko: Both
my dad and my uncle played in the same folk music band, and since i can
remember, folk-, disco- and rockmusic was looming large for me. My first
contact with djing came very soon on different school parties. After
this i was djing on some Sunday afternoon parties for young teenagers In the early nineties i began to spin house in different clubs.
MA: You guys are not only DJ’s, but Producers too. When and how did you get into production?
Patrick: 1999 Mirko and I meet on a party, where i was doing my first live
act (techno at that time under my alias “patrick lassarde”) and mirko
was playing a DJ set. Short time after this we were in studio together
and the project “liquid phonk” was born. 2001 we had our first release
on Patrick Lindseys label “School Rec.” where also some other releases
followed.
Mirko: yea, 1999 was a good year
MA: What have been your biggest influences and inspirations in your music journey thus far?
LP: There is no specific producer or DJ
that has affected us most. Every record, that hits our heart, has more
or less impact to everyone of us.
MA: What has been some of your highlights as a DJ/Producers?
LP: First highlight was 2001, when we held our first vinyl-release in our hands.
Second highlight was a few weeks later, when we came into a
local club and people were dancing to our release, played by a foreign
DJ.
Another highlight was definitely last year, when
house-legend Larry Heard aka. Mr. Fingers charted our track “Higher”,
which we released on Something Different Records in November 2013.
MA: What don’t you leave the house without?
Patrick: Glasses, music, headache pills
Mirko: Music for my ears, a little bit money for a good coffee
We both are family men and love our families and friends, so the beloved are always with us – or at least in our minds!
MA: What is the one track that you never go to a gig without?
LP: There are many tracks – some tracks that change from time to time, some tracks we have in our case since years!
These days you can’t go to a gig without some KiNK, Jimpster or Shur-I-Kan tracks. But we also would never go to gigs without the great tunes by our friends Henry L & Ingo Sänger, Marlow & Rainer Trueby, Sello, Jorge Takei or Paskal & Urban Absolutes.

Beside this there are many alltime favourites and house classics in our case.
MA: What can we expect from this guest mix on the Deep Inspiration Show?
LP: Our Deep Inspiration Show became an
almost-2h-guestmix. We started with two slow no-4-to-the-floor-tracks
and switched afterwards to some really nice slowbombs. The last hour we
speeded up a little to around 115bpm.
MA: Anything that you guys are working on that we might be interested in?
LP: Right now
we are working on an upcoming EP for Something Different Records.
Another EP we finished last year will come this year, too – for this we
are in touch and dialouge with some great labels! Beside these two EPs
we are remixing some great tunes to be released on different labels the
next months.
MA: When are we seeing you guys in South Africa?
LP: You shout, we come!
No…seriously: right now we have no booking for SA. But since our
release on Compost Black Label we have many fans in SA and we really
would like to play and party there.
MA: Finally, what is the one music festival you still wish to play at one day?
LP: “Burning man” Nevada, USA!
But at least every gig in every little
club is important for us. Either if you play for thousands of people or
just hundred or less: it is the vibe and the connection between the
crowd and the musician/dj, that makes a party unforgettable!
